For the past ten years, CAAU and UCP/Wheels for Humanity have been working in partnership to bring the gift of mobility to needy children and adults in Ukraine. Together, this joint project completed ten deliveries of wheelchairs and other mobility aids to needy people in Lviv, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Volynh, Uzhorod, Chernivtsi and Kharkiv.
In September 2010, a team of five volunteers, representing CAAU and UCP/Wheels for Humanity, delivered a shipping container packed full with wheelchairs, therapy equipment and other supplies to needy people in the Lviv oblast. The previous wheelchair delivery to this area was in approximately 1999. Surprisingly, the team encountered a man who was still using the wheelchair given him during that first visit.
The success of the Wheelchairs for Ukraine partnership between CAAU and UCP/Wheels for Humanity (WFH) has been largely due to the countless hours of volunteer work spent refurbishing wheelchairs at the WFH facility in North Hollywood, California. It’s been supported physically and organizationally by CAAU and the recipient organizations in Ukraine. However, it is the financial support from our donors that makes this program possible. CAAU’s goal is to have the next shipment of wheelchairs to Ukraine by no later than the summer of 2012.
